BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Detectives said an 18-year-old accidentally shot himself while trying to rob an 89-year-old man Sunday evening.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Riki Ingram of Baker got the elderly man's wallet, but was arrested in the getaway car.

Police said the robbery happened on South 18th Street.

Cpl. L'Jean McKneely with BRPD said the victim was washing his car when Ingram walked up and demanded money.

McKneely said the suspect grabbed the older man's wallet from his pocket and the victim decided to fight with the suspect.

McKneely said the young man pulled out a gun and fired a shot in the air.

He then fired again, but accidentally shot himself in the leg as he tried to put the gun in his pocket.

McKneely added a 17-year-old girl in a car picked up the wounded teen. Police pulled over the car on Greenwell Springs Road.

The driver was identified as Terrione Booker, also of Baker.

Booker was taken to the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison and Ingram went to the hospital.

Both are charged with attempted first-degree murder and armed robbery.
