ST. AMANT, LA (WAFB) - One man has been arrested and another is still on wanted for allegedly stealing copper from an elementary school in November.

The Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office believes Chet Lavigne, 23, and Jamie Bourgeois, 41, destroyed over 10 air conditioning units at Lake Elementary School in St. Amant and took the copper tubing out of them.

Both men are from Gonzales.

Lavigne was arrested Thursday afternoon at his home.  Bourgeois is still on the loose.

Investigators visited area scrap metal dealers and actually located the copper that was stolen from the school.

Surveillance cameras at the business had captured the sale on video, which was turned over to detectives.

Deputies identified Lavigne and Bourgeois as their suspects using that video.

The school realized the units were broken when officials tried to turn on the air on Monday, Nov. 14.

The estimated cost to repair the broken units was close to $10,000.

Lavigne and Bourgeois are facing felony theft, felony criminal damage to property and criminal trespassing charges.
