BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The trial for Baton Rouge's third suspected serial killer got underway Monday afternoon.

Jury selection in the second-degree murder trial of Jeffery Lee Guillory began at the 19th Judicial District Courthouse around 1 p.m.

The 45-year-old man is on trial for the 2002 death of Renee Newman.

Guillory appeared in court just last week for a motions hearing.

His lawyers were hoping to get some police interrogation tapes thrown out as evidence.

However, they were not successful.

"The judge ruled what he thought were the relevant portions of the statement and the portions that are admissible under the law," said prosecutor Dana Cummings.

Another important element of the case is whether or not convicted serial killer Sean Vincent Gillis will testify during the trial.

Guillory's attorneys claim Gillis may actually be the one responsible for some of the murders Guillory has been linked to.

In addition to Newman, Guillory is suspected of killing Florida Edwards and Sylvia Cobb.
