Layoffs looming at Southern

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - The budget has been finalized and some Southern University employees may be looking for a job soon.

Chancellor Jim Llorens says 82 positions will be eliminated at the university and as a result, about 33 employees will lose their jobs.

The job cuts include administrative assistants, painters, carpenters, librarians and others.

The cuts will also come through not filling vacant positions and retirements.

Despite the problems, Llorens says he's optimistic about the university's future.

"I think this is a critical year but it's going to be a good year for us and it's going to take effort everybody do what have to do this year and prepare to move forward," said Llorens.

Letters will be sent to affected employees next week giving them a 30-day notice.  The layoffs could take place as early as mid-October.
