GRAMERCY, LA (WAFB) - Detectives believe a 22-year-old man who jumped from a bridge while being chased by authorities is responsible for killing at least one prostitute.
The Kenner Police Department said Kylan Laurent of Vacherie was involved in a chase that ended in Gramercy, where police said he jumped off the Veterans' Memorial Bridge.
Police believe he is responsible for the murder of Anita McDonald, 22, of Flowood, MS, who was found dead early Tuesday morning inside a room in the Comfort Suites motel in Kenner.
"It appears it was by asphyxiation," said Police Chief Steve Caraway. "There were ligature marks on her neck and hands, consistent with strangulation."
Investigators were trying to determine if her murder is connected to a similar one that happened two weeks prior at the La Quinta hotel in Metairie.
"That is a dangerous lifestyle because you are dealing with people. Her clients are people she doesn't know," Caraway added.
The Louisiana State Police said Laurent is wanted for violent crimes in East Baton Rouge and Jefferson parishes.
A trooper spotted him not far from the Veterans' Memorial Bridge, where authorities said their suspect took a dangerous dive.
"As he was coming up the bridge, he pulled his vehicle to the shoulder, got out of the car and suddenly jumped over the side of the bridge," Trooper Russell Graham with LSP said.
Laurent's flip-flop sandal was found on the ledge of a beam below, where several agencies were searching the Mississippi River and the thin patch of woods on the banks of the river for their stubborn suspect.
State police said the agencies involved will continue searching until they find Laurent.
