PRAIRIEVILLE, LA (WAFB) - Dottie is a cocoa-colored dog with a tender touch and an undeniable appreciation for affection. The loving stray needs a lot of both these days.

A couple of weeks ago a sheriff's deputy found her in Prairieville, laying in the shade with a shoe string wrapped around her neck. Save-An-Angel co-founder Kristie Sullens helps rescue dogs like Dottie. She said the dog was helpless.

"Everything was exposed in her neck, except her Carotid artery was the only thing still holding on," Kristie Sullens said.

Sullens said she is only able to tell Dottie's story of survival because the deputy, Ascension Parish leaders and school children who collect money to save animals, came together to save the dog's life.

"It was a team effort, and I think that that is what shines through," Sullens said.

Dottie has gotten her stitches taken out and her neck has healed. Someone has stepped up to become a surrogate foster. However, Save-An-Angel co-founder Johnny Sullens said in two months Dottie will be ready to move into a permanent home with owners who can focus their time and attention on her.

"Dottie, due to the severe neck injuries, will have to be in a home with a single dog because dogs tend to play with dogs around the neck, she will be tender and timid to those areas," Johnny Sullens said.

Dottie needs heartworm treatments and a complete vet checkup, on top of her recent emergency visit.

Save-An-Angel.org has set up a fund to help raise $2,500 for Dottie, but they are far from reaching that goal.
