SPRINGFIELD, LA (WAFB) - A man is facing animal cruelty charges after two starving dogs were found at his home Thursday.

Vernon Hollingsworth, 32, of Springfield allegedly led an emaciated Boxer out of the doghouse, but it collapsed after taking a few steps.

According to the Livingston Parish Sheriff's Office, a malnourished black lab was chained near the doghouse, but the only water available to it was four feet beyond the reach of the leash.

Hollingsworth allegedly told deputies he didn't have a job and was unable to provide for the dogs, adding he would borrow food from neighbors and family to feed them.

The boxer eventually had to be euthanized.

The lab is expected to recover.

Hollingsworth has been charged with aggravated cruelty to animals, simple cruelty to animals and failure to pay child support.

His bond was set at $31,500.
