St. Martin Parish announces mandatory evacuation

BUTTE LA ROSE, LA (WAFB) - St. Martin Parish officials announced a mandatory evacuation order will go into effect Saturday for the area expected to see the impact from the opening of the Morganza Spillway.

They said the Butte La Rose, Happy Town and Sherburne Wildlife Management area, which include LA 3177, Herman Dupuis Road and LA 975, fall under the order.

The area will be secured at 8 a.m. and no one will be allowed to enter it. The people who live there are urged to wrap up their flood preparations as quickly as possible.

A shelter will be set up inside the gym at Breaux Bridge High School for those in need of a place to stay. Parents are reminded to please remember to bring toys, books and games to occupy their children.

Those planning to stay at the shelter should bring a proof of residency and a five to seven day supply of the following:

Blankets, pillows, sleeping gear, towels and washcloths

Non-perishable food

Any and all special dietary needs

Baby food, formula, diapers, and wipes

Personal hygiene items

Any medication that will be needed both prescription and non-prescription
