PINE GROVE, LA (WAFB) - The Louisiana State Police said a 57-year-old bicyclist died after a sport utility vehicle hit him Tuesday evening.

Trooper Nick Manale said James Moorhead of Denham Springs was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Jamarcus Gray, 25, of Denham Springs was charged with negligent homicide and careless driving.

Investigators reported Moorhead was pedaling along the shoulder of LA 16 just east of LA 63 in St. Helena Parish when a 2002 Ford Explorer veered off the road in a curve and hit him around 6:30 p.m.

Moorhead was wearing a helmet, but was thrown into a ditch. He was pronounced dead when he arrived at Our Lady of the Lake Hospital.

Gray was booked into the St. Helena Parish Jail but was released after posting a $50,500 bond.
