Louisiana offers to settle with family of Ronald Greene for $4.8 million
State agrees to pay family seven years after man died following high-speed chase and trooper beating
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Louisiana has agreed to settle with the family of Ronald Greene for $4.8 million, seven years after he was killed following a high-speed chase and beating by state troopers.
The agreement is still being finalized, according to officials.
Greene’s family said state police told them he died after crashing his car in 2019. Body camera footage leaked much later showing Greene was alive and apologizing when he exited the vehicle. Troopers were seen on their own videos punching, dragging, and stunning Greene.
Investigation and fallout
Greene’s death prompted federal and state investigations. It led to the removal of LSP Colonel Kevin Reeves and his command staff and years of criticism over how authorities handled the case.
On Tuesday, Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill said, “I can confirm that we reached an agreement to resolve outstanding claims in civil litigation against the State arising from the incident involving Ronald Greene. The State agreed that it was time to end this litigation, which arose under the prior administration, and put this matter behind us.”
No federal charges were ever filed against the troopers involved.
Family lawsuit
The Greene family sued the state, accusing troopers and state officials of using excessive force and then misleading Greene’s family and the public about what happened that night.
“We were told Ronnie was killed in a car wreck. The cover up, the lies… they rewarded these killer cops. Those complicit in the lies and the coverup of my son,” Mona Hardin said in an interview a year ago.
“Those that were all part of this I hope you never have a good nights sleep, I don’t know how they can sleep good at night,” Hardin added.
The case became a political flashpoint in Louisiana, exposing individuals at the highest levels of government and what they knew tied to this case.
Hardin said she will never stop fighting for her son.
“Someone needs to pay, in whatever way. Justice needs to be done and the state of Louisiana, this was wrong — the cover-up, the lies on so many levels. It’s evil; it’s corruption at best,” Hardin said in 2025 when speaking with the WAFB I-TEAM.
