BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Two East Baton Rouge Parish sheriff’s deputies and a suspect were shot during the execution of a drug warrant in Baton Rouge Thursday morning, June 6.

One of the deputies was rushed to a hospital and was initially listed in serious condition. However, he was released from the hospital late Thursday afternoon. The second deputy was shot in his bullet proof vest and was not injured. The suspect, who died at the scene, has been identified as Tyquarius Armstrong, 21.

The shooting happened around 10:30 a.m. at a home in the 5600 block of Robertson Avenue near Hollywood Street as members of the DEA Task Force were executing a warrant. EBR sheriff’s deputies were on the scene.

Law enforcement explained they were conducting a “knock and announce” search warrant in an ongoing narcotics investigation when the shooting occurred. They reportedly announced over the loud speaker that they were coming into the home, and two people came out.

EBRSO released body cam footage from the shooting.

Law enforcement officers went in to clear the house, and came across a suspect who fired shots at officers, who returned fire, according to the sheriff’s office.

“This incident exemplifies how dangerous this job can be every day. I’m grateful our deputies are not more seriously injured. I was fortunate to spend time with our wounded deputy and his family at the hospital, and I am happy to announce that he is expected to make a full recovery. The second deputy was fortunately only shot in his bulletproof vest and was also checked out and cleared. This is exactly why we make training a priority at the East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office,” said Sheriff Sid J Gautreaux

Officials say the names of the deputies shot will not be released due to their undercover status.

Mayor Broome’s office released the following statement about the shooting of an EBRSO deputy:

Emergency officials are responding to a shooting involving a deputy on Thursday morning, June 6.(WAFB)
