Gov. Edwards speaks about upcoming health cuts
BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards spoke at the Rotary Club of Baton Rouge on Wednesday, June 14, about an upcoming meeting of lawmakers to discuss approved cuts to healthcare.
Lawmakers will return to the Louisiana State Capitol on Tuesday, June 20, for an emergency meeting around the $100 million taken away from the Department of Health in the state budget.
Members of the Senate Health and Welfare Committee will be meeting to discuss the impact the cut would have on health services. Lawmakers have been sounding the alarm on this one once some of them learned it was what they voted for.
The governor shared his remarks on the issue at rotary.
“Those dollars are used to match federal dollars,” said Edwards. “That cut would be in the neighborhood of $400 to $500 million were it to happen. I’m looking at all my options and I will use every means at my disposal to minimize or eliminate those cuts to LDH.”
The meeting is set for Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
