Preteen accused of shooting parent arrested, officials say

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Officers with the Baton Rouge Police Department have arrested a 12-year-old boy who they say shot his father.

According to BRPD, the 12-year-old suspect was booked into the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention Center on Tuesday, March 7, and charged with attempted second-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon.

The shooting reportedly happened around 3 p.m. on Monday, March 6, near the Warwick Apartments on Jefferson Highway.

Police said the child shot his father after having a disagreement.

The victim was taken to the hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, police added.

Police said they remained on the scene as they worked to determine if the suspect was locked inside one of the apartments.

One witness said people living near the scene were asked to remain indoors since around 4 p.m.

Other witnesses said they heard officers pleading with someone to come out of an apartment. Later, the witnesses reported hearing loud bangs.

Police confirmed around noon on Tuesday, March 7, that the suspect had been found.
