BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Baton Rouge area adoption agencies are already preparing for possibly busier days in the future, following the overturning of Roe V. Wade.

The decision by the Supreme Court gives women one less option. But some local adoption agencies want women to know that there are resources available for them.

“We have been providing adoption services since 1964. We also have pregnancy services which helps anyone who is experiencing a crisis pregnancy or an unplanned pregnancy,” said Stephanie Sterling, the Director of Family Services, at Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Baton Rouge.

Sterling is also a licensed clinical social worker with Catholic Charities of Baton Rouge.

“We do approved and waited families who are prepared and vetted and ready to adopt,” said Sterling.

Catholic Charities of Baton Rouge helps moms learn more about the adoption process through education. And following the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, they believe more women could seek their services.

“It is really fresh. I do think it probably will cause an uptick in adoptions, but I also think it will cause an uptick in requests for assistance,” said Sterling.

“We are certainly having a lot of conversations and addressing issues in our team, which would help us to be better able to serve our community post-Roe,” said Teri Casso, the executive director of the St. Elizabeth Foundation.

It’s the same sentiment for the St. Elizabeth Foundation, a non-profit adoption agency that assists couples hoping to adopt and women looking to make an adoption plan.

“We do not know what to expect, it’s so unpredictable. You know, Roe been in place 50 years, St. Elizabeth did not exist 50 years ago. So we don’t have any experience in a pre-Roe environment,” said Casso.

Casso hopes if women find themselves in an unplanned pregnancy, they would consider adoption as an option, to help other families who are struggling

“It’s a gift of a child when you are able to be pregnant, to a woman who is unable to be,” she said.

While women can choose adoption for so many different reasons, experts just want them to think out their decision first.

“Try not to make any quick decision, because it is one of the biggest decisions that someone will ever make in their lives, and the best decisions are made when good information is available,” said Sterling.
