PORT ALLEN, La. (WAFB) - Ernest Wilson Drive, the roadway underneath the Intracoastal Bridge, will be closed this weekend.

Many driving across the Intracoastal Bridge may have noticed the construction and orange cones, the Department of Transportation is warning folks now that there will be closures.

Ernest Wilson Drive will close temporarily tonight, April 22, 2022. The closure includes Ernest Drive from Capital Drive to Mahaffey Road.

“Pretty much the time like between 12:30 [and] 1[p.m.], it starts getting busy; 3 o’clock - oh, you could just hang it up,” explained Cotina Brown.

Brown said she is tired of sitting in traffic and is ready to see the improvements. However, DOTD asks drivers to please be patient. Sometimes, new construction brings more delays temporarily. Drivers told WAFB that they worry about how long the construction will take.

“As an employer on the west side, it is really concerning because it’s going to affect our employees and their travel back and forth,” said Lisa Morel.

DOTD said in order to widen both Intracoastal Bridges to three lanes, closures will need to happen, so construction workers can access the work zone.

“There is a lot of activity at the port; as you know, there are a number of residential developments down that LA 1 corridor,” said Dr. Shawn Wilson, secretary of DOTD. “Ultimately, we want to make a more efficient moveable solution, mobility solution, rather for vehicles that are traveling north and south of LA 1.”

DOTD added the closures will make it safer for workers and drivers.

“First of all, I am worried about safety, that comes first. If they feel the need for it, I am for it,” noted Brown.

“Please be patient with us. This is a sign of progress it will get better, but this is the nature of construction. Everyone wants construction progress, but no one wants a construction zone,” added Wilson.

This total closure will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 22, and will end at 6 a.m. on Monday, April 25. There will also be another total closure of Ernest Wilson Drive the next Friday evening through Monday morning.
