BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - East Baton Rouge Mayor-President Sharon Weston-Broome publicly endorsed state Senator Troy Carter (D - New Orleans) for Louisiana’s 2nd Congressional district Monday, March 22.

Carter is seeking to fill the congressional seat vacated by Cedric Richmond who left the seat in January to become a senior adviser in President Joe Biden’s administration.

“As Mayor-President I have always valued the strength of relationships to help deliver and ensure success for the city of Baton Rouge and the parish of East Baton Rouge. I have worked with Troy for decades and I know that he will continue the strong relationship that Congressman Richmond had with our city and parish,” Broome said.

“Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome will be a blessing for our team as we go into the April 24th runoff. I want to make sure Baton Rouge’s voice is heard in the chorus of the 2nd Congressional District so I’m glad she can help relay their needs. I’ll be prepared on Day 1 to fight for equitable vaccine distribution, job opportunities, criminal justice reform, infrastructure investments, and a minimum wage increase for working families,” Carter said.

On Saturday, March 20, Carter earned enough votes to advance to a run-off with state Senator Karen Carter Peterson (D-New Orleans).
