Firefigthers say deadly house fire on Packard Street is ‘suspicious in nature’

BRFD investigating house fire on Packard Street

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Officials with the Baton Rouge Fire Department (BRFD) say they are investigating the cause of a “suspicious” house fire that left one man dead in the 4900 block of Packard Street on Tuesday, Jan. 26.

Curt Monte, a department spokesperson, says firefighters were called out to the scene around 4:52 a.m and arrived to find the home engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to contain the blaze before it spread to adjacent structures.

Crews found, Rodney Johnson, 55, inside during an initial search of the home. Authorities do not believe that Johnson lived in the home and are working to determine why he was there at the time of the fire, according to Monte.

“The fire is suspicious in nature,” Monte says.

Anyone with any information about this fire is urged to contact Baton Rouge Fire Investigators at 225-354-1419.

The Louisiana State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Baton Rouge Police Department are assisting BRFD with the investigation.
