BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Officials with the Baton Rouge Police Department say one of their K9 officers was shot and injured while attempting to detain a suspect during a traffic stop during the early morning hours of Wednesday, Jan. 6.
Investigators say a BRPD K9 unit pulled over a suspected stolen white Dodge Ram pick-up truck around 12 a.m. in the 300 block of North 18th Street.
As the officer and his K9 waited for backup to arrive, the four occupants attempted to run away from the pickup truck.
Sgt. L’Jean McKneely, a department spokesperson, says K9 “Mack” gave chase to one of the occupants and was shot while detaining that suspect. K9 Mack was transported to the LSU Vet for non-life-threatening injuries.
McKneely says officers arrested Silas Cloutare, 18, of Baton Rouge, and Jerell Hebert, 31, of Lakeland.
The other two suspects are still at large.
Clouatre was arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, illegal carry of a weapon, illegal use of a weapon, injuring a police animal, and resisting an officer. Hebert was arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
K9 Mack is a one-year veteran of BRPD, according to McKneely.
Anyone with any information about this incident is asked to call BRPD’s Violent Crimes Unit at 225-389-4869 or Crime Stoppers at 225-344-STOP(7867).
