PORT ALLEN, La. (WAFB) - Gage Thibeaux, 23, faces charges on claims he killed his girlfriend’s infant and may be connected to bite marks found on her toddler.

Yancy Guerin with the West Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office said the infant suffered from 3rd-degree burns over 30% to 39% of her body.

The 5-month-old baby was severely malnourished, weighing just under 8 pounds, Guerin said.

West Baton Rouge officials charged Thibeaux with second-degree murder with an underlying charge of inflicting cruelty to juveniles because he allegedly caused the infant’s death while in the process of injuring her.

The mother is also being charged with manslaughter for failing to notify law enforcement, officials said. Booking records were not immediately available.

The charges announced Saturday, June 6, come a day after an investigation was launched into the infant’s death at a motel on La. 415 in Port Allen.

The cause of death will be pending further studies, however, the West Baton Rouge Coroner’s Office is still investigating this case as a homicide.

The toddler was taken into state custody.

District Attorney Tony Clayton said the infant went through a "horrible, horrible thing in the last few days.”

A spokesman for the West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff’s Office noted investigators will leave “no stone unturned” as they work to figure out what happened.
