BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A Baton Rouge resident says his parents called him after their washing machine started giving them problems. He says he called around to a few places to get some quotes and thought he found a good deal when a company offered a discount with a year-long warranty.
"If you agree to that contract for a year, then your washing machine diagnosis fee will be waived,” the man said the company told him.
However, he says the company took advantage of his elderly father by convincing him to pay hundreds of dollars for work that was not completed. He says his dad did not even get a receipt, but rather, was given information about the transaction scribbled on a piece of mail. Now, he’s working to sort out the whole mess.
If you’re in the market for some home repairs, here are a few action steps you can take to help protect you and your family:
- Take your time and do your research; being in a rush can often hinder your judgment leading to bad decisions
- Understand the terms of the agreement before signing any contract
- Never pay for a job in full before the work is completed correctly; it’s your money, so demand satisfaction
