No. 4 LSU finishes 3-2 in Judi Garman Classic after beating Colorado St. on final day

FULLERTON, Calif. (WAFB) - The No. 4 LSU softball team was 3-2 in the Judi Garman Classic in Fullerton, Calif.

LSU vs Colorado State

The Tigers (16-3) got back to its winning ways with a 6-2 victory over the Rams (9-8).

Shelby Wickersham (4-1) picked up the win, staying in the circle the whole game. Colorado State’s two runs (one earned) came on six hits. She struck out eight batters and walked one.

Colorado State took a 1-0 lead in the first inning but LSU rallied in the third and never looked back. Amanda Doyle got the Tigers going in the inning with a lead-off single. Aliyah Andrews then ripped a triple that sent Doyle home for the 1-1 tie. Shelbi Sunseri singled to left field and Andrews scored to give LSU the 2-1 lead. Then, Ciara Briggs crossed home plate on an error to extend the lead to 3-1.

In the sixth inning, Doyle smashed a ball that hit the right field fence and allowed Taylor Pleasants to score. Later in the inning, a throwing error by the catcher plated Doyle to make it 5-1. Both teams scored a run in the seventh inning.

LSU vs Washington

The Tigers (15-3) committed two very costly errors that resulted in a 3-1 loss to the Huskies (16-1).

Shelby Wickersham (3-1) started in the circle for LSU and suffered her first defeat of the season. She gave up two runs (both unearned) on three hits in 5.1 innings of work. She had two strikeouts and three walks. Maribeth Gorsuch also allowed an unearned run on two hits in 1.2 innings in the circle. She struck out one batter.

After four scoreless innings, LSU got on the board in the fifth on a double by Anna Jones that scored Akiya Thymes to put the Tigers up 1-0.

In the top of the sixth, with one out and runners on first and second, a fielding error by Gorsuch resulted in the game-tying run for Washington and fully juiced the bases. A sac fly to center field allowed the runner on third to reach home to put the Tigers down 2-1. Then, a throwing error by LSU’s shortstop on a ball hit that way turned into a third run for the Huskies.

LSU vs Cal

The Tigers (15-2) claimed another win in the Judi Garman Classic by taking down Cal (9-8), 5-1.

Shelbi Sunseri (5-0) controlled the circle the whole game for LSU and picked up another win to remain unbeaten on the season. In seven innings of work, she gave up just one run on four hits. She struck out five batters and walked two others.

The Tigers did the brunt of their damage in the first inning. Taylor Pleasants continued her prowess at the plate with a triple to right center field that scored Aliyah Andrews and Ciara Briggs to make it 2-0. Then, Sunseri ripped a triple of her own to right field to send Georgia Clark home. Next, Raeleen Gutierrez hit a double down the right field line to plate Sunseri and extend the lead to 4-0.

LSU put up another run in the third inning. Cal finally got on the board in the sixth inning.

LSU vs Texas Tech

The Tigers (14-2) claimed the 6-5 win over the Red Raiders (10-6) on a throwing error in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Shelbi Sunseri (4-0) picked up the win in relief. In three innings of work, she allowed three earned runs on three hits. She struck out two and walked one. Maribeth Gorsuch started in the circle but was replaced after four innings. She gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits. She struck out four batters and walked one.

Sunseri was also effective at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI. After Texas Tech scored a run in the top of the first, LSU responded by putting up three runs in the bottom of the inning. Ciara Briggs and Taylor Pleasants scored on a wild pitch. Then, a single down the right field line by Sunseri sent Georgia Clark home to make it 3-1.

After a scoreless inning, the Red Raiders put up another run in the third to make it 3-2. LSU came back and scored one run in the fifth and another in the sixth to make it 5-2. Texas Tech stormed back with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie it at 5-5. In the bottom of the inning, with the bases loaded and one out, Anna Jones lined out to shortstop but Clark scored from third on a throwing error for the 6-5 win.

LSU vs Loyola Marymount

The Tigers (13-2) fell 1-0 to the Lions (9-7).

It was the first time the teams have ever met.

Ali Kilponen (4-1) started in the circle for LSU and suffered her first loss of the season. In 5.1 innings, she gave up four hits and the one run. She struck out five batters and walked four others.

Shelbi Sunseri replaced her and struck out four batters in 1.2 innings of work.

Loyola Marymount’s run came in the sixth inning on a single to center field and the runner on third crossed home plate for the game-winner.

The Tigers will be back in action at Tiger Park hosting LSU Round Robin. They will welcome in Campbell and Illinois State. The first game of the weekend is set for Friday, March 6 against Campbell at 6 p.m.
