One arrested in alleged home invasion, shooting on Alexander Avenue

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Police have arrested a man following an alleged home invasion and shooting that sent him and one other person to the hospital.

According to the Baton Rouge Police Department, Derrick Smith forced his way into the victim’s home on Alexander Avenue on Sunday, Feb. 23 and exchanged gunfire with the victim. Smith allegedly ran to a neighboring house to ask for help.

When officers arrived, Smith and the victim were both found suffering from several gunshot wounds and were transported to the hospital with possible life-threatening injuries.

Officers were able to locate one of the handguns in a storm drain.

Smith told police he went to the house to buy drugs and when he went inside, unknown subjects began to shoot, according to the arrest report.

Smith was booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison on one charge of attempted first-degree murder and home invasion.
