BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The No. 9 LSU gymnastics squad scored a season-high as the Tigers claimed the top spot at the GymnasticsQuarters Mardi Gras Invitational on Friday, Feb. 14.
LSU scored 197.875 inside the St. Charles Family Arena in Missouri.
“This was the best performance of the year and it started from the first routine,” said coach D-D Breaux. “You could feel the team feeding off the momentum that each routine created. It was a great night and now we need to reset and get some rest before our meet Sunday back in Baton Rouge.”
Kiya Johnson, the top freshman in the nation, once again led the Tigers in the all-around with a career-high 39.750. She scored a perfect 10 on vault, a 9.95 on floor, and 9.925 on beam for event titles.
Sami Durante and Alyona Shchennikova both scored 9.95 on bars to claim titles in that event.
LSU was up against two top-25 teams with No. 18 Iowa State, No. 19 Missouri, and Lindenwood. It was the first time the Tigers have competed on podium this season.
The squad will quickly turn around to take on No. 12 Kentucky on Sunday, Feb. 16 inside the PMAC.
