Body recovered from submerged vehicle after 14-hour operation in Livingston Parish

MAUREPAS, La. (WAFB) - Eugene Duplessis’ body was recovered along with his vehicle after a 14-hour search of the Old River in Maurepas, Louisiana State Police investigators said.

The search began shortly after midnight Saturday, Jan. 18. Teams from multiple law enforcement agencies were contacted and involved in the search. Civilian crews also assisted.

Investigators suspect Duplessis, 71, died after his vehicle ran off the roadway shortly after 1:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 17. Duplessis was traveling on LA Hwy 22 when his vehicle exited the roadway.

The vehicle then re-entered the roadway before being driven off the opposite side of the road. Duplessis’ vehicle collided with a tree located in the Amite River. After entering the Amite River, the vehicle became submerged.

Impairment is suspected on the part of Duplessis and a toxicology sample was taken from him for analysis, investigators say.

The crash remains under investigation.
