Carolina Panthers hire LSU passing coordinator Joe Brady as offensive coordinator
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) - The Carolina Panthers have hired LSU’s passing coordinator Joe Brady as the team’s next offensive coordinator. The team formally announced the hire Thursday morning.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter first tweeted Tuesday, citing sources, that Brady was telling people that he is planning to return to the NFL and the Carolina Panthers. The Athletic’s Jourdan Rodrigue also tweeted, citing sources, that Brady had agreed to terms to become the next offensive coordinator of the Carolina Panthers.
At 30 years old, Brady is the youngest active offensive coordinator in the NFL.
Brady got his start in coaching at his alma mater, William & Mary, where he coached the linebackers from 2013-14. He then spent two years as a graduate assistant at Penn State from 2015 to 2016. He spent the 2017 and 2018 seasons as an offensive assistant with the New Orleans Saints, before joining the reigning national champion LSU Tigers as their passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach.
He was recently named as the winner for the Broyles Award. The Broyles Award is an annual award given to the best assistant coach in college football.
In 2019, LSU finished the season with college football’s top-ranked offense, averaging 568.5 yards per game and 48.4 points per game. The Tigers finished second in passing offense with 401.6 passing yards per game while quarterback Joe Burrow, who completed 76.3 percent of his passes to lead the nation, set a new FBS single-season record with 60 passing touchdowns. Burrow’s 5,671 passing yards tied for third all-time in a single season, while his passer rating of 202.0 set the FBS single-season record.
This year’s LSU offense was the first in the history of the SEC to feature a 4,000-yard passer (Joe Burrow), a 1,000-yard rusher (Clyde Edwards-Helaire), and two 1,000-yard receivers (Ja’Marr Chase and Justin Jefferson).
In Brady’s first year with New Orleans in 2017, the Saints finished No. 2 in the NFL in total offense and they were the only team in the league to finish the year ranked in the top five in both passing and rushing. The Saints were also No. 4 in the league in scoring offense.
Brady is the latest addition to the Panthers coaching staff, led by head coach Matt Rhule.
