ST. JAMES, La. (WAFB) - Our final Sportsline Player of the Week went to the explosive playmaker who was the catalyst for the St. James Wildcats Class 3A state championship victory over Jennings.
Senior quarterback Shamar Smith had a night he’ll never forget, overcoming a 7-0 deficit by leading his team to the school’s first state title in 40 years and first-ever in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome.
Smith had two rushing touchdowns and two more passing, completing 14-of-19 for 229 yards, and then the converted wide receiver got the cherry on top by lining up as a wideout and catching a touchdown pass for the final points in a 51-14 rout of the Bulldogs.
“Got him five touchdowns,” said head coach Robert Valdez. “He ran them. He threw them. In the end, he caught it. It’s just what he has done for us for four years.”
“I remember it but I be having flashbacks sometimes like, 'Wow! I really did that," explained Smith. "It’s a blessing, then our community supports us. They are behind us, so it was just amazing.”
WAFB is proud to present St. James High School with our Sportsline Player of the Week award in the name of Shamar Smith, the Wildcats’ senior quarterback.
