Coach Odums previews Southern vs Jackson State

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - Southern head coach Dawson Odums met with sports journalists Tuesday afternoon to preview the upcoming matchup at Jackson State.

PREVIEW: Southern vs Jackson State
INTERVIEW: Jeremiah Abby
INTERVIEW: Dakavion Champion

The Jags (6-4, 4-1 SWAC) will travel to Jackson, Miss. for a 2 p.m. kickoff Saturday. They currently sit at the top of the Western Division. The Tigers (4-6, 3-2 SWAC) are ranked No. 4 in the Eastern Division.

Odums talked about the Jags just focusing on themselves and preparing the right way. He said Jackson State does a little bit of everything with its run game. He added the Tiger defense will come at them, so the Jags have to win the one-on-ones.

Odums said he thinks quarterback Ladarius Skelton has prepared better for games of late, producing better results than earlier in the season. He said he thinks if the Jags can continue to run the ball well with Skelton and running back Devon Benn, then they have a good chance to win the game against Jackson St. He added the battles in the trenches will be important.

Southern is coming off a 58-7 blowout win over non-conference Virginia University of Lynchburg. Skelton was 10-of-12 for 193 yards and two touchdowns. Benn led the ground attack with 120 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. The Jaguar offense racked up a total of 363 yards on the ground. The Jaguars defense held the Dragons to 147 total yards.

The Tigers fell 48-43 to Alabama A&M on Saturday. The Jags beat those Bulldogs, 35-31, on Nov. 2.
