INDEPENDENCE, La. (WVUE) -More than two dozen Independence High Magnet School students were arrested Tuesday (Oct. 22) for fighting, according to Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Daniel Edwards.
The students involved were charged with misdemeanor disturbing the peace. They will not be allowed back at the school pending a disciplinary hearing for every student involved.
The school was placed on lock down for the safety and protection of all students, facility, and staff members.
An additional six students were removed this morning after another fight broke out during the start of classes on Wednesday.
“Our team is following the procedures outlined in our school safety plan,and the students involved will face disciplinary action that could includeplacement at the Tangipahoa Alternative School or expulsion,” Tangipahoa Parish School Superintendent Meilissa Stilley said.
Additional sheriff’s deputies are on the school’s campus Wednesday for precautionary measures.
“We must to take a strong stance against students who chooseto disrupt the learning environment and cause potential risk to the studentsand employees at the school. We will take every action possible to secureour campuses from these types of threats,” Stelly said.
The superintendent said classes are going on as normal on campus.
