Fatal crash reported on Hwy. 19 near Baton Rouge Zoo

Victim in deadly, single-vehicle crash on Hwy. 19 identified

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A Slaughter man has died following a single-vehicle crash on Highway 19. Baton Rouge police identified the man as 40-year-old Todd Haydel.

The crash happened just after 5:15 a.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 25 in the 12000 block of Hwy. 19, between Exxon Mobil Chemical and BREC’s Baton Rouge Zoo.

Police say Hydel was traveling southbound on Highway 19 when he lost control of his 1998 Pontiac Firebird. His vehicle then struck a large metal utility pole.

Hydel died at the scene, according to police.

Both directions of Hwy. 19 were closed as crews worked the scene of the crash.

The Baton Rouge Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit was dispatched.
