The shooting happened Tuesday, Sept. 3 around 2:30 a.m. in the 4800 block of North Street. Police have identified the victim as Justin Thomas, 35. Police say Thomas was shot while walking to his car after leaving a nightclub.

Thomas’ agent, Derek Major, confirms Thomas was a professional boxer in the super middle division. His most recent fight was June 21 against Eric Moon.

Thomas was transported to a hospital for treatment, where he later died, police say.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to call BRPD’s Violent Crimes Unit at 225-389-4869 or call Crime Stoppers at 225-344-7867.

WFC founder and promoter Matt McGovern provided a statement following Thomas’ death.

“He was a sweet guy,” McGovern said of Thomas. “He was always welcoming, and had a big following because he was so able to connect with people.

“All of us at WFC will miss Justin, and our thoughts and hearts are with his family, his coaches, and his teammates,” said McGovern. “There are a lot of people in Baton Rouge, Houston and throughout the fight game that will be missing him.”
