PORT ALLEN, La. (WAFB) - A 74-year-old man was killed in a wreck in Port Allen Thursday, Aug. 22.
Louisiana State Police says just before 5:30 a.m. Thursday, Troop A began investigating the two-vehicle wreck, which happened on LA 1 north of LA 988 in Port Allen. As a result of the wreck, Thomas Cloninger, 74, of Plaquemine, was killed.
LSP says the initial investigation shows the wreck happened as Keandre Hill, 33, was stopped at a stop sign in the westbound lane of LA 988 in a 2017 Western Star truck. Hill then headed west across the northbound lanes of LA 1 and stopped in the median with the rear of the truck still in northbound lane of LA 1. At the same time, Cloninger was headed north on LA 1 in a 2007 Ford F-150 truck and hit the back of Hill’s truck.
Cloninger suffered fatal injuries. LSP says due to how badly damaged his truck was, it’s unclear if he was wearing his seat belt or not. It’s also unknown if Cloninger was impaired when the wreck happened. Toxicology samples were taken from him for analysis.
LSP says Hill was wearing his seat belt and was not injured. He was issued a chemical breath test, which showed no signs of impairment, police say. He was however cited for stop signs & yield signs.
The wreck is still under investigation.
