BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - The St. George Fire Department will soon have some new digs to better serve the community. The department says it’s the largest project in the department’s more than 50-year history.
City and parish leaders broke ground on new construction on Thursday, Aug. 15 right next to the department’s main station on Airline Highway. The construction of this new facility will allow the fire department to decommission the leased facility on Castille Road. The department says that station is the only one the district doesn’t own outright.
The $12.8 million project, designed by Domain Architects and to be built by Guy Hopkins Construction, will include a new fire station, a training and communications center, and a maintenance facility. The project is expected to be completed in about 16 months.
St. George employs more than 200 people and has more than eight fire stations.
