Suspect shot during robbery attempt dies

BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A man has died after a store employee shot him while he was trying to rob a food store, according to a release from the Baton Rouge Police Department.

At around 8 a.m. Sunday, May 19, officers responded to a call about the armed robbery at Neighbors Food Mart on Dougherty Drive. Officers arrived on the scene and found a man, identified as Rico Clayton, Jr, 31, who had been shot. Police said Clayton was armed with a gun and demanded money from the store employee. The employee, however, shot Clayton during the attempted robbery.

Police said Clayton was taken to the hospital with critical injuries. He later died at the hospital, according to BRPD.

The investigation is ongoing.
