BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - No. 10 LSU got a shutout win against Monmouth in the Baton Rouge Regional at Tiger Park Friday evening.
The Tigers (41-16) pulled out the 2-0 win over the Nighthawks (36-17).
“I was really proud of our team tonight," said head coach Beth Torina. "I thought we had a lot of really great individual performances as well, but overall the most important thing was that LSU got the win tonight against a quality opponent. Their pitcher, Alyssa Irons, was phenomenal as she is very talented. We saw that and I am just glad we got the win. MB (Maribeth Gorsuch) stepped up for us and was able to bring a lot of energy to the game. And of course, these other three at the table (Shemiah Sanchez, Amber Serrett and Savannah Stewart) each had their moments as well to help us get the win).”
Maribeth Gorsuch only allowed five hits in a complete game in the circle. She also struck out five batters. She improved to 12-3 on the season with the win.
After three scoreless innings, LSU got on the board when Savannah Stewart hit a line drive down the left side to send Shemiah Sanchez home.
In the fifth inning, Amber Serrett hit a solo home run to right field to put the Tigers up 2-0.
In the top of the sixth, with a runner on second, Monmouth hit a shot to left field. The runner was sprinting home, but Stewart gathered the ball and came up throwing. She gunned the runner out at the plate to preserve the 2-0 lead.
LSU will face Texas Tech at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Red Raiders beat Louisiana Tech, 3-0, in the first game of the tournament.
