BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Discover more than books. That’s the new mantra for the Livingston Parish library system. And the library in Denham Springs is getting the attention of young and old patrons.
“We have a lot of different resources, phenomenal resources, that we can offer," said Giovanni Tairov, Livingston Parish library director. "From electronic e-books to e-magazines to a variety of programs from crafts to just wonderful things for everyone to participate and come and visit and see what the library has to offer.”
Don’t worry, they aren’t getting rid of books, but giving residents a place to enjoy a variety of programs and activities. One of the most successful: children’s programming.
“So at story time we read books, we sing songs, and we usually make a craft at the end," said Jonathan Post. “At wiggle worms, it’s just kind of pure manic energy. It’s a music and motion based program.”
The Denham Springs branch recently added a new wing to the library which now houses a 54 computer computer lab with study rooms and printing services. But the new wing also houses an innovative and creative idea lab.
“It’s a place to create whatever people can think of. We try to have a lot of tools available for them," said Jennifer Oglesby. "We’ve got the button maker. We’ve got sticker makers. We’ve got virtual reality. You can actually create things in 3-D space in virtual reality and 3-D print them. We’ve got a 3-D scanner so you can create your own thing there.”
“From basically birth to old ages we have something to offer for everyone,” said Tairov.
Parish residents can use the idea lab for creating whatever their mind can come up with. You can even submit designs on the library website and the library will print them for you at cost of materials.
“It’s not just a room blocked off for library use," said Oglesby. "We invite the public to come in and we want people to come in and participate and use all the technology.”
“If they enjoy the library when they are young they’ll keep coming back, they’ll keep learning and growing with us and be able to use those resources and be more productive citizens when they are older,” Post added.
So if you haven’t been the the library recently, you might want to... check it out.
