BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - A walk-off single lifted Southern over Nicholls at Lee-Hines Field Wednesday night.
The Jags came away with the 6-5 win.
With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth, Malik Blaise ripped a single to left field that sent Willie Ward and Tyler LaPorte home for the victory.
Cole Jenkins started on the mound for Southern, but Connor Whalen earned the win. He improved to 4-0 on the season.
The Colonels jumped out ahead in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead.
The Jags responded in the bottom of the inning, putting up two runs. They then scored another run in the bottom of the third to go up 3-1.
The score remained that way until Nicholls scored three runs in the top of the eighth and another in the top of the ninth for the 5-3 lead.
Southern rallied in the bottom of the ninth. Coby Taylor walked and Zavier Moore was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second. Then, LaPorte singled to second and loaded the bases. Ward went in to pinch run for Moore. A sac fly to center field by Javeyan Williams plated Taylor to make it 5-4.
Ashanti Wheatley then stepped up to the plate, but was intentionally walked to load the bases again. That’s when Blaise stepped up and won the game for the Jags.
