LSU pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis clears second highest height in NCAA

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - What an afternoon for LSU freshman track and field superstar Mondo Duplantis at Bernie Moore Stadium for the LSU Invitational.

The pole vaulting phenom cleared 19 feet, 5.75 inches - or if you prefer - 5.94 meters. It was the second highest clearance of his life. The best was last August at the European championships when he cleared 6.05 meters or 19 feet, 10.25 inches.

With that amazing vault, Duplantis now holds the facility record, while also grabbing the 2019 world lead. He also now holds the No. 2 spot in the history of the NCAA and an LSU all-time record as well.

Then, Duplantis called the remaining fans out of the stands and onto the track, as he tried to vault even higher, but couldn’t quite pull it off. Still, it was obviously a tremendous occasion for the Lafayette, LA native.

There were some other great performances Saturday on the track.

Kary Vincent, a defensive back on the football team, ran 10.07 in the 100-meter dash. That’s the fifth fastest time in the NCAA this year.

And, in the women’s 100-meter dash, Sha’Carri Richardson clocked in at 11.06, which is the second fastest time in the NCAA this year. She also ran a 22.78 in the 200 meters, which is the fourth fastest in NCAA.
