Southern University wins Home Depot $50,000 campus improvement grant

SU receives $50,000 grant from Home Depot to help campus make sustainable improvements

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern University was awarded a $50,000 grant from The Home Depot campus improvement, according to a Tuesday release from the Baton Rouge university.

The award is part of The Home Depot: Retool Your School Grant Program. The program provides grants to historically black colleges and universities to help the campus make sustainable improvements to their campuses.

The top three schools with the most votes are considered for a grant at the end of the competition. The grant is the second one of its kind awarded to Southern University.

The most recent grant will be used in the beautification of the iconic part of the Bluff overlooking the Mississippi River. The project includes new seating and lighting. The Bluff is a part of a number of regional and national historic trails and districts.

In 2018, the university won a $40,000 grant through the program. The funds were used to remodel the John B. Cade Library. Because of flood damage during the 2018 Christmas holiday break, the grant was also used to purchase new furniture and restore study areas.
