BROOKLAND, AR (KAIT) -A Brookland woman thought she was getting a bargain on her TV bills. Instead, it ended up costing her $800.
The 71-year-old woman told Craighead County sheriff’s deputies last Friday she had received a call from someone who claimed to be with DIRECTV.
The caller claimed she could “cut her bill in half” if she just paid four months’ in advance.
The man then directed her to go to Walgreens or Dollar General to purchase an eBay card to pay the bills.
According to Deputy Taylor Iglehart, the woman got the cards and then loaded them with $800. She then called the suspect and gave him the card numbers.
After getting off the phone, the woman said she found the correct number for DIRECTV and called it.
That’s when she learned there was no promotion going on and that she had been scammed.
