BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern and Texas Southern had to wait an extra day to begin their three-game series, but the delay was worth it, as the teams battled to extra innings in the first game of a doubleheader at Lee-Hines Field.
The Jags won 7-6 in 12 innings on a walk-off single by Hampton Hudson. It was his second walk-off single in a little more than a week.
Jerome Bohannon II started on the mound for Southern. He allowed just two runs on seven hits in 6.1 innings of work. He had five strikeouts and walked four batters. Rhett Hebert closed the game and earned the win. In 3.1 innings of pitching, he gave up one run on two hits. He had one strikeout and walked two.
After two scoreless innings, the Jags got on the board in the bottom of the third off a solo home run by Javeyan Williams.
In the sixth inning, Williams made it home to put Southern up 2-0 when Tyler LaPorte hit a pop fly to right field that was dropped and allowed him to get to third.
The Tigers roared back in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs. They added another run in the top of the eighth to go up 5-2.
The Jags then clawed their way back in the eighth and ninth innings to tie the game. A single by Johnny Johnson in the eighth sent Bobby Johnson and LaPorte home. Then, in the bottom of the ninth, a sac fly by Willie Ward allowed Ashanti Wheatley to score to make it 5-5.
Texas Southern scored one run in the top of the 12th inning to go up 6-5.
In the bottom of the 12th, with the bases loaded, Hudson stepped up and ripped a single to left center that allowed Wheatley and Johnny Johnson to score for the 7-6 win.
The second game started at 8 p.m.
