BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern took the weekend series over Texas Southern with a convincing win in the third game Sunday at Lee-Hines Field.
The Jaguars got the 16-6 win over the Tigers in seven innings.
Southern third baseman Tyler LaPorte was 3-for-3 and crossed home plate five times in the rubber match. He also had two RBI. Catcher Bobby Johnson was 2-for-4 and had four RBI.
John Guienze started on the mound for the Jags and earned the win. He allowed five runs on eight hits in 4.2 innings of work. He struck out three batters. He improved to 1-1 on the season.
Southern wasted no time taking the early lead. A double to third base by Bobby Johnson in the first inning allowed Tyler LaPorte and Ashanti Wheatley to score to put the Jags up 2-0.
The home team scored another pair of runs in the second inning. LaPorte doubled to left center to send Javeyan Williams home and LaPorte crossed the plate on a single to left field by Johnny Johnson.
In the third inning, Malik Blaise scored on a single to right field by Hampton Hudson to extend the lead to 5-0.
The Tigers finally got on the board in the top of the fourth inning. A pair of solo home runs cut Southern’s lead to 5-2.
However, the Jags scored two more runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 7-2.
TSU rallied in the top of the fifth inning, scoring three runs to make it 7-5.
Southern then exploded in the bottom of the inning to put the game out of reach. Blaise scored on a sac fly by Willie Ward. Later, with the bases loaded, Eian Mitchell singled to center field to score two more runs. Then, LaPorte reached home again on a passed ball. With the bases juiced again, Blaise singled to right center for another pair of runs to make it 13-5.
The Tigers put up a run in the top of the sixth, but the Jags scored three more runs in the bottom of the seventh to end the game.
