COLLEGE STATION, TX (WAFB) - The No. 10/9 LSU softball team beat Texas A&M 17-3 in five innings in Game 1 of a weekend series to open up SEC play at Davis Diamond in College Station, TX, Friday.

LSU is now 20-4 overall and 1-0 in the SEC. Texas A&M falls to 15-7 overall and 0-1 in the SEC.

The Tigers had 13 hits in the game, including five home runs.

“The offense has carried us all season," said head coach Beth Torina. “It’s fitting to show up on the first day of SEC action like this based on the season they are having. Shelby Wickersham came in and did a great job. It’s a tough spot for a freshman coming in in her first SEC series, but it’s nice to see her have the guts to find a way to win.”

Shemiah Sanchez hit a grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning to give LSU the 14-3 lead. It was her second grand slam in three games.

Michaela Schlattman hit two home runs in the game. The first was a two-run shot in the second inning and then, she blasted another two-run shot in the bottom of the fifth. The Tigers scored eight runs in that inning.

Amanda Sanchez and Elyse Thornhill both hit their second home runs of the season and both were solo blasts.

Maribeth Gorsuch started in the circle for the Tigers and Shelby Wickersham relieved her. Wickersham got the win to improve to 7-1 on the year.
