BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - University Lab School football coach Chad Mahaffey is leaving the Cubs’ program after nine straight winning seasons to take over as the Walker Wildcats new head coach.
Mahaffey won three LHSAA titles with the Cubs, leading them to consecutive 13-0 seasons and Division II Championships in 2017 and 2018. Mahaffey will be moving up to Class 5A with Walker, which has replaced Lester Ricard and Cecil Thomas in a matter of months.
A former Catholic High teammate of NFL great Warrick Dunn, Mahaffey is the only coach to ever have two Warrick Dunn Award winners as Sportsline Player of the Year. LSU’s Nick Brossette starred for his first five teams, claiming the award in 2014, while 2018 winner, Mike Hollins, replaced Brossette at running back the next four years before signing with Virginia.
In nearly a decade on the LSU campus, Mahaffey won three state titles in nine years from 2010 to 2018. He won 101 games in those nine seasons, with just 16 losses.
