Southern sees strong finish on Signing Day for 2019 class

National Signing Day - Southern

BATON ROUGE, LA (WAFB) - Southern head coach Dawson Odums only signed three recruits in December but added more than a dozen Wednesday to finish with a strong 2019 signing class.

The Jags were able to sign a full class for the first time since the 2015-2016 academic year. A total of 15 signees inked with Odums and company. One of them from Baton Rouge has a unique story.

Madison Prep standout safety Bertrand Carrell chose the Jaguars over 11 power five offers. Schools like Kentucky, LSU, ULL, Memphis, and Missouri were on the table but Carrell decided to stay home on the bluff. Looking at him on the field, the first thing that stood out was his physicality.

Carrell’s teammate, linebacker Myles Patin, also signed with the Jags.

“The five guys we brought in as transfers, they’re going to add to that - to the different segments in the spring - running back, D-line, wide receiver, seconadry and I think you’re looking at some of the freshmen we signed,” said Odums. "They’re very intelligent guys, they’ve got a lot of talent, and we’re going to get them ready to play when we get them in here for summer school. It’s going to be a competitive camp this fall and a chance for a lot of guys to play.”

Southern received some help up front early Wednesday morning by snagging Ketaj Castillo, a center from John Ehret High.

SU picked up a commitment from Anthony Shaffer, a safety from Central High.

Another transfer player originally from Florida, OJ Tucker, a defensive back, is now a Jaguar by way of Iowa State.

The Jags added a 6-foot-3 wide receiver from New Orleans. Kiaeem Green of Warren Easton High is going to make the short trip to Baton Rouge.

The Jags are coming off of a 7-4 season, falling short to Alcorn State 37-28 in the SWAC Championship game.

In December, quarterback Harold Blood Jr. of Destrehan High School, offensive lineman Austin Kent of Edna Karr High School, and defensive back Tyruss Gayden of West Feliciana High School signed to play at Southern.

Last month, Odums got some great news when St. Martinville High School running back Travien Benjamin verbally committed to play for SU.

The Jaguars are hoping this year’s recruiting class can help the team make another run at a conference championship.
