ST. FRANCISVILLE, LA (WAFB) - A local teacher got quite the surprise in class Thursday.
Stephanie Whetstone, a 5th grade math and science teacher at Bains Elementary School in St. Francisville, was named Louisiana’s Milken Educator of the Year. She’s the first teacher from West Feliciana Parish to ever win the award. Teacher Magazine called the award the “Oscars of teaching.”

“I just want to thank the other 5th grade teachers that I teach with. We all push each other to do our best everyday. We don’t always get a lot of recognition. I mean, our kids love us, but some days they don’t,” said Whetstone.
Along with the award, Whetstone will receive a $25,000 prize.
