GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - Senator John Kennedy was in Gonzales Wednesday speaking with the Rotary Club.
He took time to address several items, from his work in Washington, D.C. to of course, the government shutdown. Kennedy says he spoke with President Donald Trump last week after the president’s stop in New Orleans and agrees the country needs to secure its southern border. He’s hopeful the Senate will have the votes it needs to pass the president’s latest proposal, which includes funding for a border wall, as well as a three-year protection for dreamers.
“He’s put a reasonable plan on the table. We’re going to vote on it tomorrow at 2:15. The problem we have, quite frankly, is Speaker Pelosi hates the president more than she wants border security," Kennedy said.
Democrats have put forward their own plan, which would reopen the government through Feb. 8, but does not include funding for a wall.
