NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - The Army soldier who claimed he used his Saints sweatshirt and a ballpoint pen to save the life of a Texas man apparently made up the story.
On Thursday, the Army Times retracted its story about Fort Bliss Sgt. Trey Troney’s response to a gruesome car accident in Texas last month.
The Army news outlet reported that the Sweetwater, Texas fire chief said the victim in the accident didn't have the injuries that Troney claimed he did, and the names didn't match up.
The Texas Department of Public Safety told the Army Times that Troney was at the accident scene and may have lent his jacket to help the victim - but that's all.
Officials at Fort Bliss also apologized for its release of the original story.
