The holiday was created to provide Americans with one day where they can do absolutely nothing.

The holiday was proposed in 1972 by columnist Harold Pullman Coffin and has been observed annually since 1973, according to the National Day Calendar.

Americans are encouraged to spend the day without celebrating, observing or honoring anything
