Police: Argument ends in deadly New Year’s Day shooting; suspect arrested

Deadly New Year's Eve party shooting leaves 2 shot; suspect in custody

GONZALES, LA (WAFB) - One man is dead, another is hospitalized, and a third is behind bars after a deadly shooting and hit and run just about 30 minutes into the New Year.

The Gonzales Police Department reported Jose Artunez, 19, was found dead outside a home on Darla Avenue just after 12:30 a.m. and Adrian Liborio, 21, of Prairieville, was later arrested.

Investigators said three people got into an argument at a New Year’s Eve party and according to witnesses, Liborio pulled out a gun and shot Artunez four times. Police reported Liborio then ran over someone with a car. They said the second victim was taken to Our Lady of the Lake Medical Center.

GPD said Liborio ran away after the hit and run crash. The Baton Rouge Police Air Unit was called to help find him, but Liborio could not be located. However, police started getting reports around 5 a.m. about a man knocking on doors in Magnolia Crossing. Responding officers captured Liborio, according to investigators.

“This matter was handled swiftly and professionally,” Chief Sherman Jackson said in a written release. "While civilian members of our community celebrate holidays with family and friends, officers and detectives, along with medical and emergency service professionals, are often called away from them and put into action. This is a fine example of law enforcement putting the safety of the public first, and medical professionals being on-hand, all while being available 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. I personally thank all involved for their diligence and their commitment.”

Police thanked the people attending the party for coming forward with information about the incident and homeowners who reported a man knocking on doors.

Liborio was booked into the Ascension Parish Jail on charges of second-degree homicide and attempted second-degree homicide.
