ZACHARY, LA (WAFB) - Zachary High School Jr. ROTC students are preparing for the trip of a lifetime. In June, they will be heading to France to participate in the 75th anniversary of D-Day, the historic World War II battle.
Instructors say the trip has been in the works for about two years. They were invited to march in the commemoration parade.
“I’m most excited to go an honor the veterans that participated in D-Day and gave up their sacrifices so we can be where we are now,” said 1st Lt. Kale Bordelon, a sophomore.
Other students say they’ve been researching the historic day. Some of them even have family connections.
“It’s really important to me because both of my grandfathers served in that war,” added Sgt. 1st Class Audrey Hanks, a junior. “So I’m looking forward to honoring those who fought alongside them and that’s really what I’m looking forward to.”
Students will leave on June 5 and return on June 10. In addition to the ceremonies, they will also visit historic sites. They have been fundraising, collecting about $49,000 so far. They still need about $25,000 and would appreciate all contributions.
